Since the place is surrounded by mountains, you can visit any time of the year, however, October to June is the best time to visit as the temperature ranges between 100-160C. During peak winters (October to February) the temperature dips to -50C. Though heavy snowfall can make the visibility low, they offer an unparalleled view of snow-clad mountains. Heavy rains are experienced during the monsoon season (July-September) which might not be ideal for your sightseeing. The temperature in summers (March-May) is between 100-280C and is the best time to view the blooming Rhododendron flowers.

How to reach Lachung?

Lachung is well connected by roads which offer a spectacular view of North Sikkim. On your way to the village, you will see beautiful waterfalls that will stay with you forever. Located close to the China border, you will have to plan your visit in advance. To reach Lachung, you can opt for airways, railway or roadways.

By air : Bagdogra which is connected to major cities across the country is the nearest airport 195 km from here. You can reach Lachung by hiring a private cab or bus.

By train : New Jalpaiguri station (NJP) is the nearest railway station (190 km) to Lachung. NJP is connected to major cities of India. Bus and private taxi can be used to reach Lachung.

By road : Direct buses are available from Gangtok and New Jalpaiguri to reach Lachung. Excellent connectivity by road makes it the most preferred mode of transport.

The natural beauty of Lachung needs to be seen to be believed. Festivals that are celebrated with much fanfare include Lossong which is the New Year of the Bhutia community. It is celebrated in January. Another festival celebrated by Buddhists is Saga Dawa. If you wish to enjoy the cultural extravaganza associated with this festival then you should plan a trip in summers, especially the month of June when ‘Saga Dawa festival’ takes place.
